Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette: The Review

28 December 2012

I was selected to review the Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette for the Debenhams Beauty Club VIP Panel earlier in the month, and received this along with a couple of other Urban Decay goodies - including a full size Eye Primer Potion which I'd ran out of! Definitely a lovely pre-Christmas treat! I thought I'd post my review on to my blog so you guys can see what I think of it. I know a lot of you are keen on purchasing it as an addition to the existing shimmery Naked palettes, according to the chatter on Twitter!

Lipstick On Your Collar

27 December 2012

Lipstick On Your Collar - Connie Francis

Hi everyone,

I don't know about you, but applying a slick of lipstick in the morning after getting dressed helps to stick that smile back on my face and feel ready to take on the day. At 21, I also think it makes me feel like a proper mature lady! (Ahem, if only for a split-second..)

As we fall into bitterly cold mid-winter, I thought I'd compile some reviews of the lipsticks and lip butters I've been reaching for most days to give my pale skin a bit of a boost and/or my lips a surge of moisture..

Christmas Day

26 December 2012

Hey everyone!

Hope you've all had a lovely Christmas full of family, friends, food & general merriment! I'm sure you're all like me and probably watched incredibly bad Christmas telly whilst demolishing your chocolate supplies.. at least I hope so!

Thought I'd put some photos up from Christmas Eve & Christmas Day..

A Very Festive Christmas Tag

21 December 2012

Hello everyone,

Thought I'd join in with the Christmas tag I spotted on Sophie's blog and answer all the festive questions with my own wee spin on them. It would be interesting to hear everyone else's festive traditions & memories!

The German Market, Edinburgh

1. What is your favourite thing about Christmas?
I love waking up early on Christmas morning - without fail, coming downstairs to put the Christmas tree lights on and sitting and waiting for my family to get ready. We open our presents fairly early in our house (naughty). I love the smells drifting out of the kitchen all around Christmas; they always evoke such powerful memories of being young and excitable. I also love the feeling of being all cosy and together as a family on the day.

2. What is your favourite make up look for the festive season?
I tend to pare it down and stick to just concealer (Collection Lasting Perfection) and a few other bits (e.g. Benefit High Beam and Posie Tint) in the winter months anyway. Especially now I've gone obsessive about skin-care! My only kind of "look" would probably involve a berry-stained lip (Kate Moss for Rimmel Lipstick in #107) and a little bit of gold eyeshadow (L'Oreal in Pure Gold).

3. Real tree or fake tree?
We had real trees 'til about 5 years ago when my mum got sick of having to hoover up the needles falling off haha. Our fake one looks a lot better and is easier to maintain & decorate. I do miss going with my dad to collect the tree when we used to live more in the countryside though.

4. Giving presents or receiving presents?
Truthfully, I absolutely love love love giving presents. I dunno what it is but I try and build a knack at getting people just the right thing. Takes a lot of thought and care, and I just love the process of wrapping it all up pretty at the end!

5. Do you open presents christmas morning or evening?
Christmas morning!

6. Handmade christmas cards or bought?
I wish I had the artistic ability to make cards that I actually would be proud to give to people, but unfortunately I buy them. Hey, don't blame a girl for preferring Paperchase..

7. What is your favourite christmas film?
Elf is definitely high up there, obviously! I would say also The Snowman purely on a nostalgic basis, Muppets Christmas Carol, Love Actually and Miracle on 34th Street.

8. What's your favourite christmas food?
Pigs in blankets, cranberry sauce & mince pies straight out the oven. Er, hopefully not all at once but who knows...

9. What's your favourite christmas song?
Driving Home For Christmas ahaha. Gotta love a bit of Chris Rea. I also love The Waitresses' Christmas Wrapping & the She & Him Christmas album too.

10. What's your favourite christmas memory?
Definitely waking up in the morning and feeling like something magical had just changed in the house. Also, pretending to be asleep when my mum tried to creep in and fill my stocking. Later on she just left it outside my door haha.

What are your favourite Christmassy memories and traditions? Drop me a comment and keep the tag going :)

Dahlia: 'Win The Perfect Party Dress'

4 December 2012

Hey everyone,

As I regularly post about Dahlia on the blog, I thought I'd let everyone know about their new 'Win the Perfect Party Dress' Christmas campaign on the Dahlia Facebook page. Definitely the best way of winning one of their lovely dresses every week!

I actually caught a glimpse of the collar of this red & gold dress on Olivia's blog and have been waiting for it to come online! Very sparkly and ladylike all at once..

A Winter Playlist

3 December 2012

Vogue Paris Dec 2012
Hey guys,

I haven't published a playlist for a while on here; probably since last year!? But music is always on my mind, so I thought I'd compile a wee list of the tunes which are floating my boat right now. My taste has always been a mish-mash after surrounding myself with people who have verrrry different tastes and attending a lot of festivals in my teens. Recently, my boyfriend has been trying to hijack my Spotify by sticking German punk bands and Balkan Beat Box in my Ultimate playlist.. so basically, it's a MESS..

Grab yourself a cuppa, cosy up (preferably in onesie) and get the tunes going!

N.b: Apologies if the page is slow to load!

Branding #1: Growing Up

15 November 2012

Hi guys, bit of a change to scheduling!

Beata Cervin Photography
I've never used The Likely Lady as a platform for my events or marketing studies; preferring to use it as an outlet for my sporadic fashion & beauty ramblings over the past 3 years. But I think now's the time to incorporate a few marketing-focused posts into the blog - nothing major but a wee revamp has been required for a while around here. Bit of a winter detox maybe..? Given that marketing's the industry I want to work in, being in 3rd year is making me realise it's time to follow the ol' dreams a bit more! I'm also going to include more beauty chit-chat and Edinburgh gems. Gonna be quieter at the end of November until Christmas, though, in order to get these exams done!

A Wishlist: Glitter, Polka Dots & Moustaches

7 November 2012

November already?

This year has gone so quickly.. it's actually 18 days until my 21st birthday! Can finally face it now that my big deadlines are out of the way as of today. Third year is insane, it's official.

So, what with all the birthday prep, I've started thinking about shopping again (to be honest, mostly just sticking "glitter" in all search engines..). I'm 99.9% certain I'm gonna purchase the top left dress for my night out, and the rest is my winter wishlist! Craving some more jumpers and a bit of sparkle in this dreary winter weather..

Arabella Lace & Sequin Flared Dress - £29.99
Knitted Graduated Jumper in Bubblegum Pink - £36.00
Lipstick in Wicked - £9.00

What's on your winter wishlist this year?

The Bloggers Breast Cancer Awareness Raffle

22 October 2012

Hey guys!

I know a good few of you will already be aware of this fundraising raffle, on account of Sarah posting details of it on her blog and Twitter. But I thought, seeing as a few of my friends' family members are currently enduring the devastating effects this disease can throw at people, it would be helpful if I posted to increase awareness to anyone who may not already be aware, or who may have passed this one by in their blog-reader for any reason.

The Bloggers Breast Cancer Awareness Raffle. All copyright to Sarah.
So, what's in it for you? Other than the opportunity to donate to a fantastic cause (!), Sarah has brought in lots of exciting prizes for raffle ticket-holders - with a little help from fellow high-profile bloggers. More details can be found on her blog under the TBBCAR tag, or on Twitter under the #TBBCAR hashtag.

And, are you a brand or trader wishing to donate prizes? Sarah is also looking for anybody who may be able to donate prizes for this event, so please contact her before Friday if this could be an option for you.

I hope to see all you bloggers coming together for this 24 hour event, starting Friday 26th October. Use your own presence in the blogosphere - spread the word on Twitter, Facebook and your own blogs so we can build maximum awareness and fundraising!

And once again, let's all try and fight against Breast Cancer..

An Autumn Getaway

16 October 2012

Hey guys! How's everyone enjoying Autumn? Now the sun has dissipated and winter is drawing closer, I thought it was as good a time as any to have a relaxing weekend away from the stresses and strains of living in the city..

Loch Faskally
So, me and the boy decided to book a weekend away in Perthshire - an area I'd like to call my "Happy Place". We all have one; that one place which feels like arriving home whenever you step foot there. Having been visiting since I was 4 months old, it's not surprising why!

In autumn, especially, Perthshire is alight with amber tinged trees, making it the most beautiful time of the year to visit (in my opinion at least). Thousands of people flock to the area to experience the best of the Highland Perthshire Autumn Festival. Events including the Enchanted Forest (5th-27th October) make the most of the vibrant backdrop.

Dahlia AW12

24 August 2012

**To have a chance at snapping up the featured burgandy blouse and another beautiful khaki blouse, take a look at the Dahlia official Facebook page!**

Hi! It's been a while since I last posted. I've had a lot of change going on this summer - both good and bad. I really wouldn't have guessed I'd be here right now when the bells tolled into 2012. Seems the wish I made - as I watched the fireworks over Edinburgh Castle in the Friendly Fires crowd - came true. Happiest I've been in ages. ♥

So, Dahlia have started releasing their Autumn/Winter 2012 collection, and it's got me debating on which piece I'd like to invest in this season. Since I was 18 I've been toying with the idea of making an order but I always just end up in New Look wasting money on disposable fashion. With Dahlia, however, the quality and craftsmanship which goes into each piece makes them worth the purchase.. and less likely to end up in a wardrobe clear-out!

In Dahlia's words, their clothes are..
For girls who love to be unique and quirky, who's outlook on fashion and style is bordering the British eccentric and beautifully created.

Girl Crush: Emma Stone

25 June 2012

Emma with vampy lips & retro curls

If there's one actress who's been on my radar for the past 9 months, it's Emma Stone. From watching Crazy Stupid Love to Friends with Benefits to Easy A, amongst others, she's featured in pretty much every big film I've enjoyed recently. Even Jim Carrey's professed his undying (slightly creepy) love for her..

Wildfox AW12

24 June 2012

As is tradition on The Likely Lady, I like to post about the Wildfox lookbooks. They're one of my favourite brands for the storybook styling that goes into each season. Everything in the range fits a prescribed theme. In the past, brand founder Kimberley Gordon has created ranges with Woodstock and Marie Antoinette in mind. I absolutely love her ideas and drawings, and already follow her inspirations blog.

This season, Wildfox has given the 90s film adaptation of Romeo + Juliet an alternate twist on the idea of the young couple living on, causing havoc in 2012.

As Kimberley wrote in describing the range, "Would R&J have lasted over time? Or would they have realized, inevitably, that it was just a fling and their teens are meant for road trips, stories, late nights, skinny dipping, strip poker, falling in love with everyone you meet, and most importantly best friends forever, getting over breakups and learning all about what makes you happy!"

Metallics, Glitter & Ice Cream Pastels - SS12

6 May 2012

Disclaimer: If you're allergic to pastel pink, I suggest you look away now as I've been captured by the pastel brigade..

So, as of this week it's finally summer! Atleast in my case. I hope you Uni people haven't got long to go either. Currently enjoying a rest after manic hand-in sessions. Next week I'm starting my new internship with a nation-wide food festival and also have a pretty important meeting which could result in an awesome opportunity. Suffice to say I'm excited and nervous. Two months until me and the girls move into the new flat which is absolutely gorgeous! Can't wait to get planning my new room out again and spending my free days in the park - weather permitting. Plus, a friend is getting married in July so it will be my first friend-wedding.. eee!

Anyway, here's a wee spring/summer wishlist I've compiled in my hazy Bank Holiday mood (dreaming of cocktails and BBQs..). I actually have just bought the Topshop highlighter using the 20% off UniDays code which was on offer this week. Was pretty influenced by Kate from gh0stparties' blog post on her favourite highlighters.
SS '12 Wishlist

29 March 2012

Hello! It's been a while, I know.. life gets pretty manic when the sun starts shining, right?
Luckily, I've had my phone and camera on me at all times, so there's loads of photos to publish! I apologise if at times they might seem a wee bit blurry - the focus on my Galaxy S2 has stopped working for some reason..

First off, I was an extra for the first time in my friend's major project film. Pretty exciting stuff. I literally just pretended to be "drinking" Irn Bru and chatting in a party scene, building up to a dramatic death on a beach at sunrise (not me, obviously..!).

Photo copyright to Maija Koukkari (an awesome freelance camera operator/editor if ever you need one ;)
Best wake up surprise ever! By now, you all know the contents of this Glossybox.. verrry pleased with what I received on the whole, including the Clarins creme, Lancome Juicy Tube and Versace Vanitas parfum. Fantastic collaboration with Harrods!
My mumma's flowers for Mothers Day. Lots of pink!
Flat Two for Tuesdays at Dominos..
My first White Russian from Lebowskis.
Lunch at Bar Kohl. Kohl Burger.. noms!
My first visit to the newly opened National Museum of Scotland
Just me and my house..
This could be taken from when we were 14.. 'barrassin!
A very foggy Edinburgh Castle
Driving in the sunset

And I'm sure you all noticed the heatwave which just struck Britain this past week. Suffice to say I've been getting stuck into things usually reserved for summer, including water fights, BBQs, picnics & generally walking around without the need for a jacket.. long may it continue!

Impromptu BBQ.. first of the year!
 Peace and quiet
Clearly wasn't expecting such glorious weather in March and only had these sunglasses to hand. Still, it added to the happy effect!
Sunday Picnic with my bestie!
My view for most of Sunday..

This month has been a rollercoaster. So much has changed in just one month, it's crazy to think where I might be this time in April. In just 30 days I've cut ties with the person who's been nothing but damaging, I've drifted away from someone I was incredibly close to, I've bumped into old friends and shared gossip from the last year, I've made plans to see my old best friend, I've started seeing someone who used to be a friend.. It's all changed. I love it. Life moves in mysterious ways. The best is yet to come. Got lots of work to be focusing on first though!

Ps - we also just secured our flat for next year.. CELEBRATIONS! Can't wait to be in the midst of the chaos of Edinburgh during the Fringe (although I know I'll resent it come August when I can't move for tourists, haha!)

February xo

16 February 2012

Hey all! I guess it's a good time to write an update of what i've been up to of late.. it's been a pretty hectic month and we're only midway through! This is also a crossover from January, though..

In the absence of a real gentleman, this little suave guy made do nicely on Valentines' night. Scares the hell out of my friend though, haha! Via Topshop. Also, obligatory crazy face.
I got my first Glossybox delivery. Hip hip! I knew it was time to take the plunge when I discovered my flatmate is a beauty box hoarder. The lady who delivered it was like "what a pretty box". I've made use of the Eyeko eyeliner already, and the conditioner made my hair all soft & ringlet-y! (If you want proper reviews, I suggest you follow some good beauty blogs cause I'm not an expert at all!)
Cocktails.. cocktails. More cocktails. Too many. One night I just felt really sick from sugar overload and couldn't drink afterwards. Ergh.
Getting some wear out of the peter pan collar necklace my mum got me at Christmas. Looks adorable over a jumper. Still instore I see.. via Topshop.
Pub quizzing.. one of my favourite things.
 ..another of my favourite things.
Tigerlily cocktail sampling. I say sampling, I mean we literally had one each after an epic trek around the 'burgh. Was nice to go back though. Haven't been since my birthday. I chose the Raspberry Pimms Cup. Very glam. Can I please steal all the furniture and mirrors, also!?

Before this we went to Bar Kohl where I had a Candy Crush. Bar Kohl is a place I've been meaning to try for months, having originally seen it reviewed by Gillian on the Edinburger blog. When we went, they were playing Burn After Reading on a big cinematic screen. We definitely enjoyed catching glimpses of Brad Pitt while we sipped our cocktails, trying to maintain a ladylike demeanor.. The decor is fab and we decided it felt like when we walked out we'd be hailing a yellow cab.. New Yooork!

In addition to this, I also: ♥ sorted out my skin in Pure Spa during the Valentines offer ♥ accumulated a Hendrix top which I've been searching for for about 4 years!! ♥ learned to let go of things & people holding me back ♥ sorted out my erratic sleeping which drained me during January. record: 3 days without sleep. not pretty! ♥ made plans with my best friend for her to come visit me next month. So excited!! ♥ found out what I'm allergic to and feel soo much happier ♥ went for drinks in Lebowskis where a guitarist & a french singer were playing all sorts of awesome covers. squeeee'd when they did the Ronettes ♥ supported the flailing Scottish rugby team during every match. come on boys in blue! ♥ did lots of cooking & salad consuming! ♥ laughed for hours and hours with my girls 'til my sides hurt ♥ watched a lotttt of New Girl/Gossip Girl/Whitechapel ♥ went on flat viewings where I wanted to steal all the posters of Dylan and Cash ♥ had the yummiest hot chocolate in Starbucks ♥ actually enjoyed studying!?!? ♥ had weird intuitive moments all the time. hoping this is a good sign..!

From now on, however, it's deadline hand-ins galore! Can't wait to get everything over with. No more partying for a wee bit! More pyjama bedtime studying, I imagine.. Hope you're all having a brilliant February too - and got spoiled on Valentines, even if you were your own valentine like me!

Free People SS12

26 January 2012

Hiya! It's not often I post fashion spreads anymore, but I really liked the Free People SS12 catalogue shoot featuring Karlie Kloss wandering around New York in pretty cute wearable outfits, so I thought I'd embrace old Likely Lady traditions (for auld lang syne, my dear..!). Besides, it's an excuse for us all to daydream about summertime approaching.
British Summertime begins 25th March, people!
Back to normal posting asap! Been pretty much all-go since I got back to the city.
