27 December 2013
Christmas Day has been & gone *sad face*. But, after three (or four) days of consuming copious amounts of chocolate, yule log & turkey, it's time to slowly get back to reality! And, boy, am I excited to start a new year with a fresh pair of eyes and a renewed set of goals. The gym is also calling me.. eek!
More on that later.. Let's take a look back on what I wore on Christmas Day at home & a wee peek at some of my Christmassy pictures!
24 December 2013
Merry Christmas from The Likely Lady! Hope all my readers & fellow bloggers have a wonderful festive season.
...And remember to indulge yourself as well as those you love ;)
Tonight, as is tradition with me & my family, we'll be having a wee feast of M&S food and baking mince pies along with a batch of mulled wine ♥
Later on, I'll be having a full bubbly Lush bath (courtesy of some of my friends!) & pampering myself in time for Christmas Day. Really need to tackle some Nordic nail art tonight too!
Have you got any family Christmastime traditions? Let me know in the comments below!

Nespresso Connoisseur Tasting Club
Weber Shandwick & Nespresso kindly invited me to experience one of their much sought-after Connoisseur Tasting Club evenings the other week to kickstart the launch of the Nespresso Coffee Boutique on 25 Multrees Walk, Edinburgh, and who was I to turn it down? Besides, my coffee-obsessed parents would probably love me to join them!
Here's how the evening went down...
12 December 2013
So, a couple of weeks ago me & my merry band of fellow Scottish Bloggers (well, not all of them sadly!) went up to the Highlands for a Wintery break full of relaxing in our onesies and conjuring up cocktails (largely in part thanks to our cocktail masterclass for my birthday!).
But, I thought I'd start off the throwback with a WIWT (What I Wore Today) post. Haven't done one since the summer with its pastels & polka dots, so what better way to continue on than with a look at my winter wardrobe..?

Edinburgh Christmas Market 2011
It probably doesn't seem it from my lack of music mentioned on the ol' blog nowadays (other than back last winter when I curated some of my favourites), but I'm obsessed with playlisting.
For me, a spare evening is best spent creating playlists on Spotify - particularly when I know there's a season or occasion coming up!
So, I thought I'd curate some of the best bits I've discovered (or re-discovered) in the past few Christmases!

Sampling Emma, Jade & Brionny's extremely sickly Mississippi Mud-Slide (I think that's what it was?)..
So, on the 25th of November it was my 22nd birthday.
Yep. I'm that old now. Kidding. To celebrate, I booked me and my friends on a Revolution Bar Cocktail Masterclass. For years I'd wanted to organise one, so it was amazing to actually do it!
It was a million times better than I expected, perhaps down to a great (and rather attractive!) barman, Calum at Revolution Bar Edinburgh. I recommend it to everyone thinking of ideas for their next birthday or hen do - or perhaps as a rather fab surprise! The next group along the bar were a hen party and seemed to love it..
So here's what went down on the Friday night before..
7 December 2013
I'm just completing my final deadline of my first final year semester (scary!), so that's why I've been so quiet! I'm gonna schedule some posts to tide the blog over though..
First things first - the Google City Experts' 'Edinburgh Experiment' event at Summerhall's Small Animal Hospital.
I was invited by the lovely Zoe (Edinburgh & London's Google Community Manager) to the event hosted by Google. Every city has had a different theme, and Edinburgh's just so happened to be science themed! There's A LOT of interesting things to be mentioned so keep your eyes peeled... >>

Christmas 2013 Wishlist
Clockwise from Top Left: Rosie for M&S Pyjamas | Skinny Weeks & Weekend Feasts by Gizzi Erskine | Rabbit Sweater | Neom Travel Candle | Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede Cologne | Owl Print Travel Mug | Vanillary Stick Perfume | Rob Ryan Calendar | Redken All-Soft Gift Box | Moomins DVD | Pink Fleece Top | Caudalie Divine Oil Set | iPad Mini
It's officially time to embrace the festive season, as opposed to groaning about the over-abundance of Christmas cheer in coffee shops & department stores up and down the country..
Actually.. okay, I'll grant you that (I really feel for retail staff at this time of year, dealing with Michael Bublé on repeat each day in December..).
BUT! If nothing else, Christmas brings with it the chance to spend time with your nearest & dearest (behind gritted teeth or not..) & to exchange thoughtful gifts! I'm actually in love with thinking up quirky ideas for presents each year and have already got pretty much half my Christmas shopping done.. woah!
So I thought it would be time to dream up my own wishlist. Each year,
What's on your Christmas wishlist this year & how will you be spending The Big Day? Let me know in the comments below!

Giddy with excitement or what..? Might just be the excessive gingerbread latte in that mug though..
It was my 22nd birthday on Monday! I have lots of posts on Google & Nespresso to go, plus some cheeky beauty posts ;) This weekend I'm off on a Highland wintery cottage break with some of my Scottish Blogger favourites too so we shall be vlogging our wee hearts out.. watch this space.
SO, this is my post on my amazingly snuggly OnePiece which was recently gifted* to me. (Psst.. keep scrolling for an exclusive 20% code for The Likely Lady readers..!)

Back to the 'Get Fit, Get Healthy' journey..
The past couple of weeks since I posted my initial blog post, I've had highs and lows, triumphs and guilty indulgences.. (oh yes, I'm looking at you, takeaway pizza & wine). It really is a hard thing to do; to train your body to consume higher amounts of vitamin-rich superfoods and lower amounts of the junk & empty calories. And, coupled with deadline chaos in my final year of Uni, it's er... not been so easy! I don't expect the next week to be any easier, because it's my birthday, so I'm allowing myself treats! But, of course, building up to it in a healthy way is the best I can do for my body.
I've discovered a lot of ideas on the road to health, so I thought it best to share some of my discoveries on The Likely Lady for you all to share in & give me your top tips! This week, I'll focus on food..

The Review: Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder & NARS Sheer Glow Foundation
Hey you lot!
I'm BAAACK! Hope you missed me.. if not, sod's law. Anywaaay, let's get on to the exciting bits, shall we?
So, a couple of weeks back I treated myself to a day in town, which featured a lot of Boots goodies (post here) and this fabulous pairing: the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder and the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation. I know they should probably deserve their own separate posts but, to be honest, let's just get them both SORTED in one super-powered post!
On with the review...
11 November 2013
I thought I'd write a quick update to let you all know where I'm at with The Likely Lady..
I'm gonna take a short break of a week from my blog whilst I crack on with my final year Uni Dissertation! I need to trim off all the excess distractions and plough on to get my initial Proposal and other deadlines out the way (it seems November is my busiest month ever!)
But, don't worry! I shall be back - and me, Gillian, Lynne, Kirsty, Iona, Lynsey and Jade will have a heap of vlogs and photo diaries of our impending cottage break in the Highlands at the start of December.. 'Bloggers Take The Highlands' ;) we're hoping for a snowy break filled with relaxation, girlie chats & a few too many tipples of the wine variety.
I've also got my 22nd birthday coming up on the 25th of November, so I'm sure I'll have lots of things to write about that (as with every year!)
And, finally, I'm still working hard on my Get Fit, Get Healthy journey! The energy boost I've got from eating so well is incredible.. recommend you join me right now, even if you know you're gonna over-indulge this festive season! Best to start on a healthy footing.
And.. if this post doesn't provide you with anything else, let it give you this:

Anything really is possible, if you put your mind to it - via Pinterest
Today's post will take a rather different spin on things.. getting fit & getting healthy! It's a subject I've been meaning to force myself to take on, both physically and mentally.
So, without further ado..!

Background from my trip to Pitlochry last year
So, Halloween is over (or, atleast officially). It's November, at last. My birthday month (!) and the month of cosying up with a hot cup of cocoa, drawing those curtains shut and snuggling up under a fluffy blanket. It's also a month of getting in the mood for the impending Holiday season: the gift planning; getting crafty & taking refuge in the kitchen, away from the drizzle and the brisk winds. Wellies and upturned umbrellas; candles softly burning around the living room, wafting that familiar spiced apple & cinnamon scent. Fairy lights tinkling in windows as families & couples gather round for cuddles & films - it's time to really make the most of those extra hours indoors.
But what if all that time indoors is making you moody.? I've compiled my top 5 ways to rid yourself of the winter blues. These are just some of the things I've found around Pinterest, blogs or in my own experience. Enjoy!

Clockwise from Top Left: Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder, £29; Impulse Body Spray in 'Very Pink', £1 (Was £1.99); Bourjois Java Rice Powder, £9.99; Provoke Touch of Silver Shampoo, £3.09; a cheeky shot of my River Island skirt which isn't online, £10 in sale; Bourjois Little Round Pot Blusher in 'Rose Coup de Foudre', £5.99 (Was £7.99); Revlon Photo Ready Primer, £11.99; NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in 'Fiji', £30.50
Here's my 1st ever (properly official an' all that) Beauty Haul post! I do indeed purchase quite a lot of make-up, hair & skin-care products, so I think they deserve a wee post of their own, rather than the odd exclamation over on Twitter! I'm all about the glow this month; achieving the perfect illuminating base is my ultimate goal. I'm also looking to freshen up my (previously pink) locks with some ashy blonde through it next week, so some violet pigment shampoo was definitely on my shopping list to keep it looking tip-top..
I'll break this up into two parts. Part 1 will be my Boots goodies! Followed by the cheeky Space NK binge I went on.. ahem..!

The Home of Halloween at Edinburgh Dungeon
It's that time of year again.. when witches and werewolves, vampires and the odd Game of Thrones or Mario Brothers character appears on the streets on All Hallows Eve.
And what better way to celebrate than with a trip to the Edinburgh Dungeon..?
25 October 2013
The Hope, Glasgow
I was invited, along with a bunch of fellow blogger girlie pals, by Toni at DaDa to the launch of The Hope on Waterloo Street in Glasgow. It's undergone a whopping £500,000 makeover, so it's one not to miss.. Any excuse for a wee food & drink-related gathering with my favourite ladies, eh..?

The John Frieda Luxurious Volume Haircare Range
Today I've got a review for you (oooooohhh!). The lovely Olivia at The Communications Store contacted me recently asking if I'd like to try out John Frieda haircare products*. After a quick question about my hair type (lacking volume, fine but lots of it), she swiftly sent out - what I assumed to be - a product. Then, a whole range turned up on my doorstep. Suffice to say I was pretty pleased, considering I am absolutely useless with hair care..

Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair presents.. Vintage Nation!
The weekend before last, me and my merry band of fellow bloggers (we sound like something out of Robin Hood - obviously fitting?!) - Gillian, Terri, Kirsty, Iona, Fiona and friends - gathered at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange once more for another event: the Vintage Nation event held by the same team who bring you Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair up and down the UK!
It was an event full of cake-eating, tea-sipping, hair-glamourising and Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer (naturally)..
14 October 2013
This year has been the most momentous year in the history of The Likely Lady. In the 3 years before, the blog was a clutter of the occasional blog post full of all the visuals spilling out of my brain. It's gone from being a personal blog; a place where I post lookbooks; beauty reviews to millions of sudden blog events constantly to talk about. But, essentially, it needs to stabilise to make fab content that you guys wanna read!
I've found a wee home in the Scottish Bloggers fold, with lots of inspirational bloggers around me to spur me on & make my wee blog bubble a better place. And now, with the re-design which has been overdue for many years, I want to make this place as good as any of my top fave blogs! Cause, really.. you can put your mind to anything if you wanna work hard for it..

Cally Russell giving his introductory talk at the launch of Mallzee
A little late on this one (just a bit, Laura.. eesh!) but, as ever, 4th year has gotten a bit crazy so I'm cracking on with a few blog posts in one sitting before I go home for a weekend of essays! Yawwwn..
So, a couple of weeks ago me and some other lovely Scottish Bloggers (and my lovely pal Farhana!) rocked up to the much-anticipated launch of the Mallzee iPhone app. After a few drinks and one of my favourite cake pops (!!), it was time for Cally Russell, the Founder of Mallzee, to introduce us to the app...

So, it's officially Autumn, and we're starting to see the leaves crisp over into glowing auburn shades. I've gotta be honest.. October is my favourite month of all. With all that time to go into the kitchen and bake treats & whip up some heart-warming soup, it's time to really work on putting the spring back in your step now summer has disappeared! And what could be more appropriate than bringing colour into your wardrobe?
Now, I know there are many amongst you who are thinking "nooo.. I just wanna slip on my darkest winter-wear and wallow in my onesie", but that's no way to keep the mood elevated!! Well, not permanently at least.. I vote that coral is not just for summer; that pastel shades are not just part of your holiday wardrobe and that polka dots are a multi-seasonal staple! Are you with me?! GOOD! Now - GO FORTH AND SHOP!

Mimi Holliday 'Dotty Nuit' via Odyssey Boutique
Ever since I used to peruse those designer discount sites at the age of 16, I've marvelled at the intricate detailing & handiwork of lingerie designers everywhere.. but, if one brand stood out for me amongst the tide of balconette, plunge & super-padded, it was the beautiful & loveable Mimi Holliday. If you're a long-time reader of The Likely Lady, you'll perhaps have seen my adoration for them dotted amongst the pages of this blog. But never given their own wee post..
So, here we go, let the love affair commence.. (and maybe shield your eyes if you're a bit shy of discussing your undergarments on the internet)
27 September 2013
Hey, you beautiful lot!
I've gone to the bright side.. raspberry pink, to be precise! Feeling a bit fancy-free & footloose in my final year at University - where I can actually still experiment before the world of work welcomes me in with its steely arms.. Whaddya reckon..?
26 September 2013
So, last Saturday, myself, Lynsey & Jade trotted along to the Edinburgh Corn Exchange for the Pout Event 2013. Last year, I'd been keen to go but it just seemed to fall out of my memory! This year, however, after seeing how well the event did last year from their exhibitors brochure, I was keen to get involved. So thankfully we were invited by the lovely Suzanne at Hummingbird Communications & Amanda at Pout to see what it's all about!
And, boy, did we enjoy ourselves..
17 September 2013
When I was invited by Suzanne at Hummingbird Communications to review Odyssey Boutique on William Street, Edinburgh, before their stint at the Pout Event this weekend, I was pretty excited.. Having heard about the boutique on Facebook a few times, it sounded like an interesting place! Not just your average lingerie boutique, Odyssey have high-quality branded beauty treatments available, including the inimitable Shellac manicure (of course).
Er.. hello!? A beauty treatment and some new undies in your lunch hour..? I was sold!

Appointedd's shiny new Business Cards! And polka dot tablecloth.. I, of course, approve ;)
I've been a busy bee this summer.. what with my full-time placement and going to lots of blogging and industry events, I've barely been able to find the time or inclination to post a blog post of my very own - usually more likely on behalf of a business! Which is great for the ol' CV, but not so good for keeping in touch with the blogging community *sadface*..
But, here I am.. covering Monday August 12th's event (eek!). Forgive me, guys, for I have sinned..!

Revlon by Marchesa Nail Appliqué
Hold the phone! Marchesa have launched a brand new nail range with Revlon and it is looking super-glamorous!
I first clocked on to the launch a couple of weeks ago (late on the bandwagon, it seems, judging by fashion articles from May/June, noted after a wide-eyed Google search). It has really excited me. Of late, I've been a little so-so about nail art launches.. "Barry M have launched another textured nail polish", you say? Pointy nails covered in rhinestones and plastic stuff? Passé. No no no.
However, Marchesa being my favourite of all the dreamy princess-like dress designers, I wasn't going to let this little launch pass me by...
20 August 2013
Since I worked with PURE Spa during a recent summer internship (which I have now finished - hello! I'm back to blogging duties!), I have become so much more aware of looking after my nails. Me and one of my workmates would regularly file away at our nails with the Leighton Denny Uno Nail File, keeping them in check whilst we tap away at the keyboard all day. It's really instilled in me the need to keep them looking neat and tidy - amongst other tips n' tricks which I have picked up along the way and will be providing you all with.. let's pretend I've been on a research trip, shall we..?
Just one simple cheap n' cheerful routine to add to your usual Sunday pamper day (get it scheduled!) will mean a week filled with elegant nails.. what's not to love?

Let me tell you why..

Models Own at Littlewoods
L-R: Copper Pot, Golden Green Beetle Juice, Emerald Black Beetle Juice, Gold Rush & Pinky Brown Beetle Juice
So, when Siobhan got in contact from Talented Talkers to ask if I'd like to review the nail polish of my choice from the Littlewoods site, it was an easy decision for me.. Models Own are my go-to nail polish brand when in need of something bright, glitzy and statement.
I was kindly gifted* 5 Models Own nail polishes, including: Copper Pot, Golden Green Beetle Juice, Emerald Black Beetle Juice, Gold Rush & Pinky Brown Beetle Juice.
So here is my rundown of these colours!

Today's Pinspiration post comes from my current dreams of travel & summer sunshine. Lots of glitter and pink, and living a dream life on the road with nothing holding me back.. now, where are my sunglasses...?

|Pan Fried Bream Fillet | 28 Day Aged Orkney Sirloin Steak | Slow Cooked Belly of Pork|
As an Edinburgh resident (or Edinburger for all you locals!), when you think of The George Hotel on George Street, you think of the grand splendour of its formidable & majestic building. Situated on the swankiest street in the 'burgh, it's not a place for us Scottish Bloggers to hang out, normally..!
However, this was not just a normal night, as we soon found out when we crossed the threshold of their sister bar/restaurant, The Tempus..
14 June 2013
Hey ladies (and gents, of course! Keepin' it covered here at The Likely Lady)
Sorry for the silence my end for the past week.. I've been getting stuck in to my new-found role in beauty & spa marketing.. hence the fact I wasn't up for coming home and chatting about beauty on the internet some more!
So.. a week ago I went to the Blogger launch event in Edinburgh for Benefit's new Stay Flawless 15 Hour Primer (which is ouuuut.... NOW!). It was a fantastic evening of beauty goss, eating, drinking, giggles and the general camaraderie that you start to expect at Blogger get-togethers! And, of course, the products speak for themselves when it comes to Benefit...

Watermelon Martini at Dragonfly
I thought I'd write a quick life update post as life is getting a bit cray cray (but mostly all good now!)..
First off, I'm starting an internship in Digital Marketing tomorrow within the beauty industry. It's my absolute dream, and I'll be dealing with the social media/blog/communications side of marketing, alongside another marketing intern who'll cover market research. I'm extremely excited! Fingers crossed this is the start of my career beginning..
8 June 2013
It's a gorgeous day out in Edinburgh. Hope it's lovely weather wherever you are too. Thought I'd get my flatmate to take a couple of photos of my new go-to summery outfit.. sneaked to Costa beforehand and loaded up on iced vanilla latte after wanting it for days! Caffeine buzz..
3 June 2013
Essie: a nail care brand which has rocketed in popularity in the last year, most prominently during their launch of a diffusion line in Boots stores up and down the country. They've become one of the most lusted-after luxury nail care names in the business.
Back at Christmas, my lovely friend Maija bought me their Matte About You mattifying top coat, which I had yet to try out until now! It's a lovely little magical bottle, and I'm in love with the difference it makes to my existing nail polishes; giving them a shiny new 2013 upgrade..
2 June 2013
Here's one review I really should have moved to the top of the to-write pile! This is the Super Facialist by Una Brennan Tea Flower Deep Clean Purifying Cleansing Wash (haha!). For a product with a ridiculously long tongue-tying title, this product packs a helluva punch!
I originally spotted the Una Brennan range reviewed by Alix about 6 months ago, and ever since then I've been hooked. So much so that my skin gets a bit jittery when I place a dollop of any other cleanser on my face..

Just a little something we should all try and abide by..!
I've certainly learned over the years to choose and carve out my own happiness, rather than hope it just happens to me (in an intangible, miraculous way..)
For anyone only starting out on the whole happiness journey, I suggest you read Gala Darling's blog if you haven't done so already. Since I became an avid reader around 2008/2009 (as a disillusioned teenager), she has been one of the main influences in propelling me to follow my dreams and become happy in the moment. There are lots of useful archive posts on there, such as Magical Thinking, A Girl on a Mission, How to Get Calm in a World full of Crazy and In Praise of Calling it Quits amongst many, MANY others.. She inspired me to start on my Radical Self Love journey, and I couldn't be more proud of all the risks and obstacles I've overcome to keep powering on. Ok, I know some people have problems with her as a writer, but in my case, it helped me a lot in becoming the positive thinker I am today.
I'm really keen to read The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin asap too!
*Update* Just bought the book, so fingers crossed it'll be a good 'un..!
What have you done recently to choose happiness and take responsibility in creating it?
Let me know in the comments below :)
21 May 2013
Yet another event (my last in a series of them!); on Sunday May 12th, me, my friend Stacey and Gillian from Elevatormusik all turned up for a rather unexpected BYOB launch evening at the newly-opened Pizza Express in Morningside...
What followed was an evening of fine wines and even better pizzas! What I'd do for one right now...
16 May 2013
The Laura Mercier counter *drool*
So, last Weds (8th May), me, Lynsey and Roisin met up at Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh for a nice wee shop-in evening, with hair & beauty talks from various beauty industry insiders, as hosted by Grazia Magazine..!
11 May 2013
I have a few posts lined up to show you some recent events I've been to. This week was my last proper week of deadlines (as well as my busiest in terms of blog events!) so I now have time to FINALLY blog..
Last Sunday (May 5th), me and a friend woke up extra early to make it into the queue for free treatments at the annual Spa in the City in St Andrews' Square. Having attended last year, but only turning up at 4pm and missing all the freebies (sad-face), it was great to finally fully absorb the event and get pampered by some of Edinburgh's biggest brand names..
15 April 2013
As I write this, my cat Misty is all squished up next to me giving me cuddles, as I'm spending a night at my parents' home after a week and a half away from her. So much love for that little babe! Spent a gorgeous weekend with my best friend down in Sheffield, and then have been making my flat all homely & doing lots of spring-cleaning! Plus, I've been filming with the National Museums of Scotland and helping them with a launch.... *wink wink*
Last time I compiled a Pinspiration post, it was whilst in a pretty low mood, requiring lots of pep-talking to get me feeling positive again.. this time, however, I'm feeling pretty optimistic and motivated! So what better time to pop up some of the imagery that's pervading my eyeballzzz?
13 April 2013
Now, Hydraluron - even the name strikes interest into avid skincare fans. Especially if you're a follower of Caroline Hirons, who LOVES this stuff. And given that she's well-respected in the beauty blogosphere, I was very excited to try it out. If you've not heard of this yet, I suggest you give her initial post a read for the nitty-gritty science!
So, here we go!
