Essie Matte About You Top Coat: The Review

3 June 2013

Essie: a nail care brand which has rocketed in popularity in the last year, most prominently during their launch of a diffusion line in Boots stores up and down the country. They've become one of the most lusted-after luxury nail care names in the business.

Back at Christmas, my lovely friend Maija bought me their Matte About You mattifying top coat, which I had yet to try out until now! It's a lovely little magical bottle, and I'm in love with the difference it makes to my existing nail polishes; giving them a shiny new 2013 upgrade..

The Promise
"Smooth, matte finish. Works on all nail shades. Colour stays matte.
To use:
Apply 1 coat as a protective top coat after application of essie nail care and essie nail colour. Reapply as needed to refresh your matte look."
A simple enough promise..!

The Reality

The product is similar in consistency to a clear top coat, but with a bit more thickness (or "gloopiness", as it's usually referred to..) Once applied on top of your regular manicure - in place of your usual top coat - after a wee second of settling in, your colour transforms into a matte finish. I was actually really surprised because when it's first applied it looks shiny and completely different.

So far, so good! As well as mattifying my colour, it has also made the drying process quicker, as my nails don't get smudged or any dreaded pillow-marks after application.

As you can see in the below photos, I used Barry M's Base Coat in 'Clear' and Avon's Nailwear Pro nail varnish in 'Coral' (old, discontinued) alongside the Essie Matte About You..

..Ta-da! A perfectly stylish SS13 manicure at home, for just £8.99.

Would I Repurchase It?

As this was a Christmas present from a friend, I actually probably wouldn't have thought of buying this beforehand! But I can see the bottle lasting a while, so we'll see how I get on.. It's definitely a quirky wee product which makes me wanna do a bit of jazz-handing ;)..

Essie Matte About You mattifying top coat is available at Boots and Superdrug, usually retailing at £8.99 for 15ml

Are you a fan of the matte nail look? And what is your go-to nail colour for summer? I'm a fan of a pop of coral orange or coral pink!
