The Entrance to Monteiths, Edinburgh
For my 22nd birthday, me and my parents & bestie Emma descended on a little ol' place known as Monteiths; just off Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile. Having been lured by the promises of Scottish culinary excellence & twinkling fairy lights which lead you down into Monteiths Close, it really wasn't a difficult choice to book it!
So, for now, let me take you on a journey down the rabbit hole into Monteiths Restaurant.. *oooooh, ahhhh!*
Could my best friend have picked a bigger badge for me?
As you're led down Monteiths Close by the fairylights entwined in twigs surrounding you, you already have that element of excitement & mystery instilled in you. Half the experience is getting there!
And, once you do get there, you're not to be disappointed!
We took our seats at a lovely table near enough the fireplace to really warm up from the Royal Mile's crazy weather, and sat down to read the menu. Now, I have a bit of a bad habit of planning out what I'll be eating practically a year in advance *hangs head in shame*, but this time I kept changing my mind every 2 seconds.. so many options!
To keep us occupied whilst we made our choices, we ordered a bottle of wine & the waiter also brought us all out glasses of prosecco to celebrate my birthday. A lovely wee gesture, and one which was much-appreciated! I noticed another birthday table get the same treatment, so it's nice to see everyone is treated equally in a top-notch award-winning restaurant such as Monteiths.
I settled on the Rabbit & Ham Hock Terrine to start (which, since checking the updated menu, I've noticed has been swapped out for a similar Game Terrine. I'm sure it's just as yum!) I was pretty damn pleased with my choice, as it was melt-in-your-mouth delish, and the accompanying chutney was equally fantastic; totally complementing the entire thing.
My mum chose the Innis & Gunn cured Salmon (also no longer available, eek! Sorry folks! It's available in another form, however), which was fantastic by all accounts. Beautiful presentation, too. Almost too good to eat.. almost.
For my main, I went for the Rib Eye Steak with Bearnaise Sauce & Duck Fat Chips (hey, if you can't do it on your birthday, WHEN CAN YOU?!). OH, MOTHER. This was genuinely the best steak ever ever. Also, this photo does it no justice, cause it was all a lot bigger than it looks.. The chips were to die for and I was scraping up the remnants of sauce as best I could *drool*..
Ketel Skittles Cocktail
Afterwards, I went for a celebratory cocktail which tasted like Skittles.. perhaps appropriately named 'Ketel Skittles', then?
AND, I chose a chocolate pudding with salted caramel as my dessert (no longer available, sad face). And, this happened..
Happy 22nd Birthday Laura!
Completely unplanned, I might add. The team at Monteiths were on the ball that night, for sure! I definitely had a smile on my face for the rest of the evening.
Thank you to Monteiths for a wonderful evening & a birthday meal I'll never forget.
Visit Monteiths for full menu & booking info. Prices start from around £6 for a starter / £16 for a main.
