Dean Jones Hairdressing, Edinburgh

15 June 2014

Here's me, looking like an awkward turtle because I'm taking photos of myself on my Nikon in a public place. But it was all in the name of a good hair day, thanks to Dean Jones Hairdressing on 3a Elm Row, Edinburgh. I was invited to try out his newly opened salon with a complimentary cut & blowdry service. And, it was seriously overdue.. be wary of my shockingly limp hair in the 'before' pictures which will surface below the break.. *shields eyes*

When I first walked in, I was greeted by the team in the light airy listed building (!!) that the salon operates in. After a wee introduction, Dean himself came and sat down with me to give me a little consultation on what I wanted out of the appointment. I awkwardly pointed at my embarrassingly overdue layered cut and asked for a good trim! As, at this point, it was before my Ibizan holiday, I wanted to maintain the length and simply get rid of the frazzled dry ends that were snaking their way up my hair, before I stepped into the sun. I said I had been focusing on using Argan Oil, which he explained is great but only really treats the outside of the hair shaft. To make my oil and treatments really work & not wash them down the drain (waste), I needed to start from the root: my shampoo & conditioner. As for my cut & styling, Dean got my taste pretty quickly, which is a bonus in hairdressing, given the amount of hairdressers I have had who have preferred to state what *they* think your hair should be like. With his 26 years of hairdressing knowledge and insight, he has a fantastic grasp at making clients feel at ease, so I felt I was in good hands.

After a lovely hair wash using Wella SP Care Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner, which featured a relaxing Indian Head Massage, I felt really chilled out in the quiet calm environment. Unlike the super busy city centre chain hairdressers of Edinburgh, Dean Jones' feels like a sanctuary. With the minimal, chic and modern surroundings, it feels like a treat for a busy Edinburgh resident; somewhere to escape to for a bit of pampering.

Dean talked me through the cut and gave my layers a good trim whilst I sipped on my cuppa tea. I asked him about what made him open his own salon, and it reflected what a lot of established employees feel: a need to manage something of their own. It was time to use his talents & strengths and build a salon of his own. After years of searching for the right salon premises, this listed building on Elm Row in Edinburgh fit all of the criteria. It really is in a fantastic location, just down from the city centre heading towards Leith Walk. I reaaally love the big airy traditional windows at the front of the salon too; they're such a focal point!

Dean prepped my hair with Sebastian products: the Texturizer, Shine Shaker and Shine Define. I let him know I liked a voluminous look without any hint of flat sleekness going on. He got it! The shorter layers cut in beforehand really shone when the hair was blow-dried using a large barrel brush to create textured waves. My ombré colour which was starting to look blocky and flat looked much more stylish after the cut!

All in all, I loved my little afternoon tucked away for a pamper (out of the Scottish rain!!), and would recommend a visit to Dean Jones Hairdressing if you're ever in need of a good cut and no-nonsense good results using great products! I also received a little discount card after my cut & blow dry where I can choose 1 discount over my next 3 visits, ranging from £5 off a cut & finish, £10 off a colour or a free treatment with any full priced service. So good! I'm pretty sure anyone gets these after their appointment, so it's worth the visit. Mine is valid until the end of the year.

Prices for Ladies start from £25 for a Blow Dry / £40 for a Cut & Finish / £45 for a Full Head Colour. Prices refer to Stylist bookings only.
