#TasteofEdinburgh The Scotsman Spa, Edinburgh: The Review

12 September 2014

As part of The Scotsman Hotel's new campaign #TasteofEdinburgh, I was invited to review their Aveda Spa inside the hotel as part of their 'Indulgent Experiences' week (8th-14th September). As it's pretty much a tradition for me & my mum to do spa days every once in a while (she's my spa day partner in crime!), I invited my mum along to give her a little pampering.

Psst - scroll down for a competition!

We decided to start our afternoon off right with a glass of prosecco each in the North Bridge Brasserie upstairs, which definitely got us into the relaxing frame of mind! We then made our way down to the spa, which felt like entering a spaceship! It was full of ultra modern metal finishings on the bridge you walk down to enter the spa & leisure reception. Pretty swish.

We then filled in our consultation forms for our treatments, and were shown around the spa, pool and gym area, before popping into the changing rooms to change into our fluffy white robes & complementary slippers (which I've definitely been wearing ever since, ha!). The staff were really helpful and lovely, and I couldn't fault them throughout the day. I actually had to pop down to reception to ask for another towel and I noted how welcoming it felt. There are some spas I've been to in the past where the staff are sometimes a little snooty & cold to any requests, but this was not the case at The Scotsman Spa.

On changing into our robes, we were welcomed outside by our therapists for the afternoon. As I was led through into the room, the mood lighting and scents of Aveda plant oils was just right for my upcoming Chakra Balancing Massage and Elemental Nature Customised Facial with the Perfecting Plant Peel add-on. My therapist started off my massage by presenting me with a deck of cards to choose from, with the images face-up. I simply had to pick which card appealed to me most, and I picked out what resulted in a focus on my Heart Chakra (see more info here and here). This meant that my therapist paid most attention to treating my chest and back area, which encapsulates the heart, throughout my massage.

As I lay down on my front, my therapist sprayed the Aveda Chakra 4 Balancing Mist Spray around the room to calm me as she began her massage. My treatment lasted for an hour, by which point I was completely calm and practically sinking into the massage table! Towards the end, she began the facial treatment, which felt wonderful. I'm not someone who is that bothered about the actual skincare involved (my skin is good already), but the act of having your face massaged is incredible. I recommend everyone gives it a go one day.

As I was led into the relaxation room, provided with a cup of herbal tea, lots of water & all the newly released fashion and lifestyle magazines, I couldn't be more at home! My therapist even tucked me in under a big fluffy duvet as I practically floated away on a cloud. The relaxation room smelled lovely and lots of candles flickered around the dimly-lit room. It was just fab. If I could've spent a bit longer there, I would've been one happy bunny!

All in all, my spa experience was amazing. My mum chose the same facial treatment but with a Body Polish beforehand, which she said was great. She wanted the massage along with an exfoliating treatment, and said her legs had never felt more refreshed and pain-free (she suffers a lot with knee complaints, so the massage worked wonders). We made sure we drank lotttttts of water after our spa day, as that's one thing I learned from working in marketing for a spa company..! Always drain out the toxins released during your massage!

Aveda Replenishing Body Moisturiser: The Review

As well as being offered a spa afternoon for me & my mum, The Scotsman Spa have kindly provided me with lots of Aveda goodies to recreate my spa experience at home. I've been using the Replenishing Body Moisturiser since last weekend, and it's really nourishing & luxurious in the evenings when I want to really shut off from work mode and get a good night's sleep. The whole range has a scent of plant & flower extracts, so it's a little bit marmite.. if you like that sort of essential oil scent, you'll like this. The consistency is thick and creamy, and sinks in well into the skin. It's more of a pampering body product, I would say, so maybe more for the evenings when you want to really indulge yourself!
