Where I've Been Eating in Edinburgh: A Round-up

18 January 2015

Hey everyone!

I decided to take a break from blogging, but I'm back with a wee round-up of what I've been eating and drinking lately around Edinburgh. Recently, me and my flatmate Gillian have been meal-planning for the week, so we're not eating out as often (and I'm trying to eat healthier home-cooked meals). However, December was choc-full of restaurants and bars, so I thought I'd let you all into the newest places I've been heading to to fill my belly..

From sushi to warming casseroles; brunch to Chinese feasts, it's all here!

Chop Chop

248 Morrison Street, Edinburgh, EH3 8DT. 0131 221 1155 / 41-43 Mitchell Street, Glasgow, G1 3LN (opening this month)
Average price: £35 for 2 people
Chop Chop Edinburgh

Chop Chop has often been referred to as one of the best Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh. In fact, according to them:

"Visited by Gordon Ramsay in his quest to find Britain's best local restaurant, Chop Chop Haymarket has received an AA Rosette for the high standard of its cuisine every year since 2010."
That's quite a high honour! So, when I was invited to dinner at their Haymarket branch*, I came with pretty high expectations. When you enter, you're presented with a little guide on how to order. This may sound a bit random, but Chop Chop have a tapas-style way of ordering, which is a little different to most Chinese restaurants. Me and Gillian decided on around 3-4 dishes each and that was more than plenty! We were pretty impressed with their dumplings (a speciality) and the noodles and crispy chicken were both also fab. We were encouraged to sample the dessert ice cream dumplings at the end, and it was a pretty fun experience - fried dumplings with ice cream inside, anyone..? Yes please! And, they're on a mission to expand nation-wide.. so stay tuned!

* My dinner, excluding drinks, was paid for by Chop Chop, However, all views are my own.

Blonde Restaurant

75 St. Leonard's Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9QR. 0131 668 2917
Average price: £50 for 2 people
Blonde restaurant Edinburgh
Blonde was our Christmas work night out venue of choice, and wow - it was lovely. Instead of the usual festive fayre, the menu was full of unique warming winter options. I went for the casserole of venison with red wine, root vegetables, nutmeg and chocolate; buttered mash and parsnip crisps. Oh my God - it was amazing. The clementine and champagne jelly with clotted cream ice cream was also A+. It's quite a nice homely place which doesn't feel pretentious or intimidating. Perfect for a casual dinner out of the way of any city centre crowds.

Harajuku Kitchen

10 Gillespie Place, Edinburgh. 0131 281 05 26
Average price: £40 for 2 people

Harajuku Kitchen Edinburgh
More of a sushi girl/guy? Harajuku Kitchen in Tollcross is likely more your bag then! I'd been meaning to visit for a while, ever since attending a beauty event up the road at JFK Hairdressing, where Harajuku's sushi was the canapé of choice. It really is wonderful. The detail of presentation is beautiful, and it tasted great! I'd recommend the Sushi Mix Set Special (2 Nigiri, 6 Hosomaki & 4 Futomaki) to share as a starter. The chicken katsu curry was also brilliant.

The Blackbird

37-39 Leven Street, Tollcross, Edinburgh EH3 9LH. 0131 2282280
Average price: £45 for 2 people (or £20 for brunch)
The Blackbird Edinburgh
And, finally, the pièce de résistance - my favourite place in Edinburgh - The Blackbird in Tollcross. Whenever I fancy a casual night in the pub, this is where I head. I even spent the majority of my last birthday evening holed up there with a group of friends. And, this very morning, I headed there for brunch! It was once voted the most stylish bar in Scotland, but don't let that put you off or expect high standards: it's very much a casual hip hang-out. No need to dress up to the nines here! You can even catch a band on a Sunday evening whilst nursing a pint. So, the food. I've always enjoyed dinners here, and cannot fault them. The french toast with bacon & maple syrup was wonderful and very generous portion-wise. Go here for a good catch-up with friends whilst perusing their brilliant cocktail menu!

Have you been anywhere great for food in Edinburgh lately? Or, are you planning to visit soon..? Let me know in the comments below!
