VDeep, Edinburgh: The Review

VDeep Craft Beer and Curry Bar Edinburgh

Last Thursday, I was invited to the media launch of VDeep; a craft beer and curry bar mash-up in Leith. Masterminded by TV personality, comedian and runner-up on Celebrity Masterchef, Hardeep Singh Kohli, and Head Chef Ruairidh Skinner (formerly of The Vintage in Leith), VDeep is a first for Scotland. Kohli came up with the idea when he noticed a gap in the market; so many people say they're going out for a curry then a beer (or vice versa), but never at the same time. However, he's made it clear that he wants VDeep to be primarily a craft beer destination which serves 21 contemporary Indian dishes to match. And, boy, do those Indian dishes impress..! With not a hint of mango chutney in sight..

If you've read my previous blog post on Just Burgers and Beers, you'll know that I'm not really a beer drinker.. I thought I'd found my beer of choice at that event, but I was pleasantly surprised at VDeep too! There really are craft beers for every palate. I happened upon Drygate Brewing Co's Outaspace Apple Ale (sweet as cider but with a dry lager finish) and it really was fab. I did also finish off a pint of Williams Bros' Caesar Augustus too, but wasn't so keen on that one.

Aside from the craft beer, we were served Haggis & Apple Pakoras which blew my mind. So tasty! I even managed to polish off two of those. I'd recommend them for anybody hoping to visit in the future. We also tucked into bite-size versions of the Tandoori Chicken; Dhal Makhani (a vegetarian curry); Kohli Fried Chicken & Mutton Achari (I don't eat mutton or lamb, but I was assured it was tasty).  The whole experience is based on one of the overriding themes of Indian culture - sharing. Customers are encouraged to order dishes to share and just get tucked in! I love that feeling, it's very homely and comforting.

I'd love to head back to try out the Bangras & Mash (chicken & coconut sausages, masala mash & smoked tomato chutney) and Curried Cauliflower Cheese (cauliflower poached in spiced milk, garam masala & cheddar). They even have a brunch menu for the weekends which is so appealing! Check it out here. All in all, a wonderful evening in a really laid-back cool environment. I especially loved catching up with the lovely Lianne and her fiance Robin - always a good wee night where those two are involved!
